Prevention is Better Than Cure. Says Who?

Thursday, June 24th, 2010

You’ve likely heard this before… “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.”

Says who? I mean come on. If prevention was so popular why would we see so many “cures” being marketed. Why? Because of basic human nature that’s why.

We play the odds, we ‘wait and see’. We figure that if it breaks then we’ll fix it. Afterall, if it never breaks maybe the prevention was never required – who can tell…

Prevention is the smart thing to do – no doubt about it. But mankind is not all about making ‘smart moves’, we make decisions based on emotion, ego, and occasionally, sometimes logic.

For every one person who ‘prevents’ something, there will be many, many more who will gladly wait and see – and then PAY handsomely for a cure.

Educating the masses is a noble thing to do, but it won’t necessarily make you wealthy. Don’t believe me? Here’s proof: TOOTHPASTE.

We all know that brushing your teeth is a good way to prevent tooth decay and gum disorders yet the toothpaste manufactures don’t try telling us this… no way, that’s too boring. They gave up trying to educate us about these things years ago.

Now it’s all about SEX!

They tell us it “freshens our breath”, “makes our ‘smile’ whiter” and of course this improves your sex appeal (of course they don’t actually say this – but we all know that’s what they’re selling).

Think CURES not PREVENTION and your bank account will love you for it.

One last point. This whole cure vs. prevention argument is like the “teach a man to fish” story. Sure we could all learn to fish and have fish for life…

But that’s what grocery stores are for right – to ‘BUY’ fish not ‘CATCH’ them?

Facial Acne Scar Remedy – Prevention is Better Than Cure

Friday, April 23rd, 2010

The best facial acne scar remedy is to prevent the scars from developing. Sometimes it is not possible and your tries are wasted. This in turn leads you to look for remedies and cures to solve your acne problem. Acne scars can be very unpleasant and therefore it is necessary to get rid of them as soon as possible.

There are so many remedies available that you can choose from. These remedies help you to get clear skin and helps in acne scar removal. The remedies will however require you to be patient and let the remedy do its job. Home remedies are also effective to some extent such as applying a mixture of nutmeg and milk to the affected areas.

When the acne scars are mild and light then you can always use cover up. This method will be very effective in hiding the acne scars. There is a variety of make up to choose from. Depending on the type of skin you have, you may want to use grease-free or oil-free makeup products.

Dermabrasion is an effective means to reduce the appearance of acne. In this procedure, you have to lightly scrape the uppermost layer of the affected area. Initially it can make your skin look tender but this method has been proven to be very effective. All procedures after all take their own time to heal.

Another effective acne scar removal treatment is laser resurfacing. Its effects are the same as using dermabrasion but it has more advantage as the laser system penetrates deep through your skin and the procedure is easier to control.

Chemical peels, punch techniques, dermal filters and subcision are the other kinds of remedy used in the treatment of acne scars. However, there needs to be a timely treatment because any delay can result in the formation of cysts which will be more difficult and painful to remove.

Back Pain – Prevention is Better Than the Cure

Friday, February 19th, 2010

The spine consists of 24 small bones called vertebrae, the spinal cord runs through a hole in each of the vertebrae from which the body’s nerve roots are attached, which links them to the brain. Any pressure on the spinal cord can cause anything from pins and needles to acute pain. By staying in good physical condition most back pain can be avoided. Stretches, aerobics, and exercise which strengthen the back are very beneficial in preventing most back pain. As most cases of back pain are muscular in origin, the pain usually happens as a result of the way a person uses, or misuses, his or her body.

Bad posture in walking, sitting or even standing can have a negative impact on the back, pulling and pushing the spine out of alignment and resulting in sprains, spasms, and weakness in muscles, tendons, and ligaments. Sleeping in the wrong position or on the wrong sort of bed often exacerbates the problem further so paying a little bit more for a proper mattress with good support is a good investment.

Being aware of such simple things like getting out of a chair, getting dressed, getting out of bed can greatly reduce the chances of getting back pain, and changing life long bad habits through an ongoing process of exercise and self-awareness will enhance your chances of a pain free life.

There are many different causes that result in back pain, it is not only important to identify what the problem is, but how the problem arose in the first place. This will determine which type of treatment is necessary for each individuals problem back. If you see an orthopedic surgeon you will get cortisone, and maybe surgery, if you see an acupuncturist you will get needles, and if you see a chiropractor you will get adjusted.

While prevention is better than a cure there are lots of treatments available to counteract back pain, but when it comes to a chiropractor Cork residents are lucky to have numerous options on their doorstep.

Prevention is Better than Cure: Battling Candida

Friday, February 6th, 2009

Candidiasis is a stubborn infection that requires a persistent, long-term treatment to clear. And even after treatment one will be required to undertake steps to make sure the infection does not recur.

Candida Albicans exists in benign quantities in a healthy intestinal flora. Normally, these fungi do not cause harm to a healthy body. Unfortunately, though, if there is an overgrowth of these fungi, it could cause a systemic infection.

Surveys show that about 1/3 of the industrial population suffer from yeast oriented infections. The stressful, synthetic, and processed nature of today’s modern lifestyle can be attributed with increasing the incidence of such diseases. The synthetic nature of modern man’s diet and environment invariably tweaks the normal balance of bacteria in humans.

Some causes of Candidiasis include the misuse or overuse of antibiotics, deficient diet, exposure to germs, stress and lowered immune response, sedentary lifestyle, and others.

Typical treatment of Candidiasis could take as long as 9 months to a year, and do not assure one that the fungal overgrowth will not recur. Candidiasis is one disease that one would rather avoid than endure. Those who suffer from Candidiasis typically have skin inflammations, and inflammation of the mucus membranes such as the throat (thrush) and the vagina (vaginitis). They also suffer from chronic fatigue syndrome and are often beset by a bevy of respiratory, nervous and intestinal problems. The liver also suffers greatly from amount of toxins the fungus produces when in great numbers.

As they say, prevention is so much better than cure. So here are some measures one can undertake to avoid developing such an ailment and prevent it from recurring if previously infected.

1. Healthier diet.

Avoid processed foods. It is always better to eat fresh vegetables and fruits that are undefiled by chemicals and steroids. If you can skip cakes and fast food, do it. It may not look it, but such processed foods can do so much harm to your body. They not only cause the imbalance that encourages yeast overgrowth, but are directly responsible for hundreds of other lifestyle diseases.

You must make sure that the protein sources in your diet are free from chemicals, hormones, steroids, antibiotics and other synthetic elements. A safe bet would be fish, and fowl that are not grown at poultries. Meat grown at poultries and farms are usually given antibiotics and steroids to both keep them away from disease and to expedite growth. The chemicals these animals have been exposed to have a secondary effect on those that consume these products.

2. Use antibiotics judiciously.

Some people jump at using antibiotics at the first hint of a cold. While antibiotics are beneficial when used in moderation and are used properly, they can cause bacterial resistance if improperly used. And if bacteria become resistant to an antibiotic, you will have to switch over to a more potent antibiotic. If they become resistant to that antibiotic, you will have to switch to an even more potent antibiotic. And so it goes on and on – along with the added side effects they bring to the body and the havoc they wreak on the bodies natural flora.

3. Exercise

Exercise is a great way to keep the body healthy. Sedentary lifestyle is one predisposing factor to yeast infections. It is also a sure way to avoid other lifestyle diseases that come with such a lifestyle.

Hemorrhoid Prevention is Better Than Cure

Tuesday, February 3rd, 2009

An ideal life is one that is free from any physical suffering. Recuperating from previous physical condition is no better than not having to experience the pain. The same holds true in a case of hemorrhoids. A patient suffering from this condition may avail of the treatment for hemorrhoids to ease his agony. However, nothing is much more uplifting but to see that you need not undergo any kind of medication or surgery. In truth, there are several means to prevent the occurrence of hemorrhoids and these preventive measures are very simple.

Regular bowel movement is one of the most effective means of preventing hemorrhoids. Whenever you feel the urge, do so without delay. Frequent delaying of going to the toilet causes constipation which in turn causes you to strain hard to move your bowels. As soon as you’re done, immediately get up. Staying long in the toilet can increase pressure on your veins. After your bowel movement, you may also try sitting in a tub with lukewarm water for 10 to 15 minutes to relax your anal canal.

Make it a habit to drink plenty of water. Ideally, you should drink at least 8 glasses of water a day. Water helps you to be properly hydrated; it regulates your digestion; and it softens your stool. Water is the best to drink and cannot be substituted. Avoid alcoholic drinks and coffee because these will only dry your stool. It is essential to increase water intake if you are engaged in strenuous activities.

Include in your diet vegetables and fruits that known to be high in fiber. It is recommended to take 25 to 30 grams of fiber a day. Fiber helps in digestion and adds moist in your stool thus, it reduces your straining and allows your stool to come out naturally. Avoid eating processed foods because they don’t have fiber and merely increase your chances of constipation. Grains and seeds are also good sources of fiber.

A healthy digestion is also a key to prevent undergoing hemorrhoid cure. Good digestion stimulates regular bowel movement. Exercising daily particularly walking for about 20 to 30 minutes a day helps the digestive system.

Do not sit or stand continuously for a long period of time. This will add pressure to your hemorrhoidal cushions causing it to be pulled downward. As much as possible do not stick long on the same position; do something that will change your current post. A 5-minute power walk every hour helps prevent hemorrhoids.

If you can avoid, do not lift heavy objects. But if you must, exhale first and do not hold your breath while lifting. This will reduce the pressure on your anal. The same technique applies to pregnant women when delivering babies. When pushing the baby out, exhale deeply and do not hold your breath.

All these are simple tips that you can observe to prevent hemorrhoids. For some, each tip may appear to be immaterial but when taken together will free you from the discomfort caused by hemorrhoids. There is no harm in observing precautionary measures. It is better to prevent hemorrhoids rather than endure the discomfort or cure it after it already gave you so much depression and anxiety.

Prevention is Definitely Better Than a Cure

Tuesday, December 16th, 2008

When it comes to many things in life, prevention is most certainly better than a cure. Nowhere is this more important than when it comes to your health. How many times have you thought to yourself, “I should probably schedule a regular appointment with my physician..”? How many of you even have a physician? This is one of the things that I found myself wondering after I completed my master’s degree in college. I was fresh out of college and flung into the working world without a clue as to what was going on.

While in college, I (as did all of my friends) had our yearly physical with the school medical staff though not by choice. But where was the guidance that was so lacking once college was complete and we were now young, brazen adults who were looking for jobs and an apartment on our own? When looking for a doctor, the way that most people find physicians is through friends of friends or a family member. However, there is an increasing number of people out there (me being one of them) who are finding doctors based on their websites. The Internet truly is a fascinating place to find people and discover all sorts of bits of information that you never even knew had existed prior to the click of your mouse.

When it comes to your health, you shouldn’t make any excuses. If you are unsure of how to go about finding a doctor, ask a friend or jump on the Internet in order to look at a particular doctor’s website. In some cases, if location is an absolute must for you and you are trying to find someone who is a bit more local, then you may want to drive by a few of the place to check them out for yourself. This is especially true if the doctor in your area does not have a website. Just because there is no website, does not necessarily indicate the level of professionalism that you might receive if you were to eventually become a patient.

The importance of making sure that you schedule regular appointments with your physician is extremely important because this is where most of the pre-screening will be done to make sure that you don’t have anything majorly wrong with you. For instance, it is often at pre-screenings where doctors will discover that a patient has cancer. Cancer, though sometimes unpleasant, is not a death wish. Rather, there are many cures for cancer that linger out there and some of which doctors are discovering every day. No one cancer patient is the same; therefore various methods for attacking this disease are probably. But one thing remains that makes all of the difference: early detection.

If you haven’t done so already, make your next appointment with your physician. After all, wouldn’t you rather know if something is wrong with you ahead of time so that you could then more effectively deal with it? I know that I would.

Prevention is Better Than Cure

Saturday, August 23rd, 2008

Would you believe if I said that condoms are used for some secondary purposes also, other than for the known use of contraception during intercourse? It is true though. One use is closely related to sex, to collect semen for infertility treatments. But the other is almost unbelievable — to prevent water clogging in rifles. However different the uses may seem, it is clear that the function is to prevent leakage.

Prevention is better than cure may sound like a clich

Vaginal Yeast Infection Treatment – Is Prevention Better Than Cure? 3 Methods Proven to Help!

Monday, July 14th, 2008

Although vaginal yeast infection treatments are available, they will be unnecessary if the condition warranting their necessity is not present in the first place. Caused by fungus in your vagina, yeast infection can be very discomfiting and can lead to redness, itchiness, and white vaginal discharges.

If left untended, they can become acute and severe which may actually become life-threatening. Nevertheless, since we are not there yet, hopefully, this article will uncover 3 simple ways that you can make vaginal yeast infection treatments unnecessary…

#1 Avoid Moisture

Moist places act as a catalyst for the growth of the fungus that causes this condition. This moisture should be avoided at all cost if you are seriously seeking a way to treat vaginal yeast infection. Moisture occurs as a result of wearing tight-fitting clothes or panties. They may also result from not changing out of wet swimsuits in a timely manner or not drying up properly after a bowel movement etc. To counteract this, you should endeavor to change out of wet clothes as soon as possible and as often as possible. Additionally, you should avoid taking alcohol and sugar too…

#2 Avoid Alcohol & Sugar

Sugar should be completely eliminated from your diet and where this is impossible to do, you should try to reduce its intake drastically. You should also avoid alcohol intake completely. The reason for this is because these substances have been known to upset the bacterial balance of your body and results in the buildup of yeast in your system. As an alternative to taking sugar, you should include lots of protein into your diet. This will help you negate the need for vaginal yeast infection treatments. Another method involves avoiding so-called “fad” acts of intimacy…

#3 Avoid “In-Vogue” Acts of Intimacy

I am not against you having fun or excitement in you sex life, no! I am against you ignorantly increasing your partner’s risk of having an infection or your own for that matter. Avoid the use of Pop Rocks or Altoids if you are orally intimate with your partner because this will cause your vagina to come in direct contact with sugar (one of the most common catalysts of this ailment). This can be avoided if you two wash thoroughly before intercourse.

In my opinion, and I think I am entitled, there is no need to indulge in fads that put your health at risk simply because you want to feel “among” or simply because you want to be part of the “hip” group or whatever.

Hand Sweating – Prevention is Better Than Cure

Tuesday, June 10th, 2008

Research is still going on to determine the cause behind excessive hands sweating. The most probable explanation doctors have come up with is genetic factor. They have linked it to the hyper activity of the sympathetic nerves which a part of autonomic nervous system. To be more specific it is mainly the thoracic sympathetic ganglion chain that is responsible for excessive hands sweating. They run parallel to the vertebra inside the chest cavity and do not affect the sensory and motor functions.

There are two types of hands sweating which are generalized hyperhidrosis and idiopathic hyperhidrosis. In the former case along with hands sweating most of the other parts are also affected. It is mainly seen in persons who are suffering from other systemic diseases like Hypothyroidism, Obesity, Neoplastic disease, febrile illness and endocrine disease. Hands sweating are one of the most commonly seen symptoms produced due to the side effects of psychiatric drugs. Always try to locate the specific cause for your illness as they help in determining the most suitable treatment. In the second category the cause of the disease cannot be determined.

Hands sweating can also be noted due to old age, hormonal changes and lack of activity. Whatever may be the cause it is a distressing condition as it affects the mental plane of the patient. It is often seen that such persons have less confidence to face the public and they dread to shake hands with people. They even feel ashamed to hold their dear ones because of this problem. Here are a few tips that will help you in controlling your disease to a certain extent.

o Drink water in plenty to keep your body cool. Excessive heating of the body leads to over stimulation of the nerves.
o Quit smoking as they worsen your illness.
o Using antiperspirants is not advisable as they only increase your ailment.
o Stress- If you under stressful situation practice relaxation techniques which will help to calm your body.

There are simple health tips that you can follow in your daily routine. You can control your hands sweating easily and effectively with the help of these tips.
